As the Houston Dynamo and the rest of the MLS prepare for the season to kick off in just a few weeks a new video replay system got it’s first real test when NYCFC forward David Villa punched the Dynamo’s A.J. DeLaGarza on a corner kick during the two teams exhibition game on Sunday.
Villa was initially shown a yellow card for the infraction but after the Video Assistant Referee system looked at the play the Spaniard was shown a red card. The VAR is being tested in the preseason but won’t be implemented, if approval is given, until the second half of the 2017 season.
No word from the league if Villa will get more punishment for the punch.
