Quintin Demps Wins Defensive Player Of The Month

HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – The NFL named Houston Texans S Quintin Demps the AFC Defensive Player of the Month on Thursday.

Demps recorded 22 tackles, four interceptions, six passes defensed and one tackle for loss over the last month of the season. He posted an interception in each of his last four games to close the season, which is a franchise record and the longest interception streak in the NFL this year.

Demps finished the regular season leading all NFL safeties with a career-high six interceptions and tied for second in the NFL overall. He also helped the team limit opponents to just 267.4 net yards per game in December/January, which led the league.

The Texans finished the season with the No. 1 overall defense for the first time in franchise history, allowing just 301.3 total net yards and 17.0 first downs per game in 2016. Houston also gave up only 201.6 net passing yards per contest, which ranked second in the NFL.

This is the first time Demps has earned Player of the Month honors in his career and the 14th time a Houston Texan has been named Player of the Month in franchise history. Demps is the second safety in team history to win the award and the first since Marcus Coleman in September of 2003. This is the third straight December that the Texans have won the Defensive player of the month. Whitney Mercilus won it in 2015 and J.J. Watt won it in 2014 to close out each of those seasons.
