HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) Sunday marked a massive shakeup for the Texans. Quarterback Brock Osweiler was benched for his backup Tom Savage, who helped rally Houston for a 21 – 20 win over the Jaguars.
The big question: will the QB switch change last? Texans head coach Bill O’Brien would not commit when asked about his decision to pull Osweiler after the game.
Whatever the case, the move worked Sunday. So how are Texans players feeling about it Monday?
“In life, sometimes you need changes,” said tight end Ryan Griffin. “Just something different. And I think you really felt that in the crowd as well [yesterday]. I think we just rallied around that.”
“It’s a tough spot,” continued Griffin. “We were struggling. He came in with the confidence and the calmness, and I think we really fed off of that.”
Ryan Griffin has a lot of familiarity with Tom Savage. They’ve practiced a lot together since both of them have been second string players for a large part of the last 3 years.
“Since he’s come in his rookie year he’s really set the tone,” the third year tight end explained. “Just calm, cool, collected, but confident. He doesn’t really have to say much, but he puts the ball where it needs to be.”
“He’s got a big cannon,” continued Griffin. “He throws a nice tight spiral. Yeah, he can really sling it.”
When pressed to describe the differences between Savage and Brock Osweiler, Griffin wouldn’t budge.
“I’m not going to get into the difference between the qyarterbacks because I’m not a coach,” said Griffin. “I’m just looking forward to the next week of practice.”
Texans defensive lineman Christian Covington and running back Jonathan Grimes didn’t have much to say about the quarterback situation either.
“That’s a question for coach O’Brien,” said Covington. “The rest of us, we just control what we control.”
“Everybody’s a piece of the puzzle,” said Grimes. “I’m just doing my part. Everybody does their part, do their job, we’ll be fine.”
We’ll likely find out who will start for the Texans against the Bengals Saturday night during Bill O’Brien’s press conference, which will be carried live on SportsRadio 610 around 2:30 CT.
