HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – Brock Osweiler threw three interceptions and would get in the end zone just once as the Houston Texans lost for the first time at NRG Stadium in 2016 21-13 Sunday afternoon at NRG Stadium.
Texans (6-5) hadn’t played a game in NRG Stadium the entire month of November and despite their early season dominance on their home turf, they did not have answers for the Chargers defense who forced three takeways and a failed trip near the goal line.
Both teams would struggle to put together drives in the first quarter as neither ran a drive of more than five plays in the period and only San Diego would cross mid-field.
The Texans would strike first during the second quarter. Brock Osweiler and Will Fuller connected on a 33-yard pass to get the ball inside the San Diego 10-yard line. Three plays later, Osweiler completed the drive with a quarterback sneak for his first rushing touchdown as a Texan. With the Novak extra-point the Texans led 7-0.
Phillip Rivers and the Chargers responded on the ensuing possession with a big play of their own. Rivers connected with Dontrelle Inman for a 52-yard touchdown reception to even the game at 7-7 with 6:44 remaining in the half.
Osweiler, who had improved in the loss against Oakland, threw his 11th interception of the season on the next Texans possession after attempting to hit DeAndre Hopkins on the sideline, he instead found Charger cornerback Casey Hayward for his league-leading sixth pick of the season.
On the first play after the two-minute warning, Rivers found Tyrell Williams for a 21-yard touchdown catch to give the Chargers their first lead at 14-7 which was the score at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Texans turned the ball over after a big run from Lamar Miller that initially placed the ball on the San Diego 23. Miller appeared to fumble with a recovery by the Chargers and although initially ruled down by contact, the Chargers would challenge and get the play successfully overturned for their second takeaway of the game.
After a 19-yard field goal by Nick Novak, the Chargers made it a two-score game when Rivers found Hunter Henry for a 12-yard touchdown pass.
The Texans were able to drive down in the final moment and Nick Novak made a 44-yard field goal to cut the score to 21-13. The Texans then recovered the onside kick with 12 seconds to play at the Chargers 41-yard line. Two chances in the end zone went for naught, however, and the game ended on Osweiler’s third interception of the game.
The Texans will travel to Green Bay for Week 13 to face the Packers. The Chargers return home next week to face Tampa Bay.
