Houston (CBS HOUSTON) – Houston Texans punter Shane Lechler was named the AFC Special Teams player of the week for his performance in week 8 the NFL announced on Wednesday.
Lechler punted four times for 203 yards, averaging 50.8 gross yards per punt against the Detroit Lions. The Lions average starting field position following his punts was the 13-yard line and his punts averaged 49.5 yards per punt which led the NFL in Week 8.
Lechler also tied Ray Brown for 27th-most games played in NFL history on Sunday.
This is Lechler’s first Player of the week honors as a Houston Texan and the third Player of the Week award for the Texans this year. Will Fuller V won it for his Special Teams play in Week 4 and Whitney Mercilus won the Defensive award in Week 1.
