HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) He’s sacked Jay Cutler. He’s held Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce in check. Hell, he’s even covered Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. And he’s created quite the role for himself with the Houston Texans.
Who am I talking about? Texans cornerback A.J. Bouye. The fourth year veteran has come a long way since signing with the Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2013.
“He got a game ball for the game he played yesterday [against Tennessee],” said Texans head coach Bill O’Brien. “He just has length. He’s competitive. He’s fast. He’s got good ball skills. He’s instinctive. He’s become a very polished player from the first day I met him when we got here. I think he understands his role very well. He’s really playing at a high level and is going to need to continue for us to continue to have success.”
Bouye was all over the field again Sunday against the Titans, recording 3 tackles and breaking up 3 passes, helping the Texans improve to 3-1 with a 27-20 win. He credits a lot of his success to working every day in practice with the scout defense against Texans star receiver DeAndre Hopkins.
“It starts with practice,” said Bouye. “I’ve been competing with [DeAndre] Hopkins for four year now . . . just to be able to compete with him and make plays, it brings your confidence up. It’s hard to cover a guy like Hopkins on a fade ball, so I feel like if I can do it with him I can do it with any other receiver or tight end.”
Constant communication with Hopkins has been a help as well.
“We’re always talking even off the field, because all we do is compete,” said Bouye. “Just for him to help me out as one of the best receivers in the NFL, it helps a lot.”
The biggest difference today for Bouye in 2016?
“I’m just paying more attention to detail,” said Bouye. “Even if I give up plays and stuff I just try to take it in a positive way and keep improving.”
With Kareem Jackson “day to day” per Bill O’Brien today due to a hamstring injury, he’ll need to keep making those plays.
