HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON)Whitney Mercilus and the Texans are 3-1 and in complete command of the AFC South. Still, he knows the Texans can be better.
“We haven’t played our best ball at all yet,” said the fifth year outside linebacker. “And still we sit at 3-1. So that’s pretty impressive. But we can’t make a lot of mistakes going forward with a lot of tougher opponents coming up.”
He’s right about the tough opposition. The Texans will travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota next week to play the undefeated Vikings in their brand new stadium.
“That’s something we have to answer,” continued Mercilus. “How can we play great on the road? And we haven’t done that yet. So this is a great, great test for us to show everybody we can win on the road, especially in an environment like that.”
The Vikings – who host the Giants tonight in Monday Night Football (which you can hear right here on SportsRadio 610 tonight) – are off to a surprising 3 – 0 start this year. And that’s despite serious injuries suffered by starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater (dislocated knee, torn ACL) and running back Adrian Peterson (torn meniscus), both of whom were placed on injured reserve.
“It’s an impressive outfit,” said Mercilus. “Especially since some of their star players have gone down [due to injury]. But the thing is, you can’t underestimate any type of opponent no matter how bad they can be or how many people they lose. At the end of the day it’s the NFL, and even the worst teams can beat you any given Sunday.”
