Ben Jones is a good player, and has a quirky personality.
Outside of Andre Johnson, he’s also the Titans unlikeliest trash talker.
That’s what made it a bit of a surprise when Jones was flagged for taunting in the Houston Texans 27-20 win at NRG Stadium today, after a DeMarco Murray rushing touchdown in the second quarter.
“I told them, hey, we’re gonna run it right down their throat again,” Jones said. “I was just excited.”
In his four years with the Texans, Jones was known for his cheery presence, and, with the help of his performance for the cameras on HBO Hard Knocks, eventually developed a cult following among fans.
Among his most notable antics: eating cockroaches and drinking his own pee on dares from teammates.
Smack talk, however, was never Jones’ M.O.
“We just scored a touchdown, I’m amped up. … We were just excited as an offensive line. That’s our job.”
Jones was drafted by Houston in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, and started out playing both guard spots beside longtime center Chris Myers. When Myers was released, and later retired, Jones took over as center in 2015, and struggled for most of the season. He left in free agency, signing a four-year, $17.5 million contract.
