Greg Ward Jr. completed 32-of-38 passes for 389 yards and 3 touchdowns as the sixth ranked Houston Cougars remained undefeated with a 42-14 win over the Connecticut Huskies Thursday night at TDECU Stadium.
The win avenges Houston’s only loss from 2015 and sends it to 5-0 on the season, 2-0 in American Athletic Conference play.
Not only did Ward account for three touchdowns through the air, but he added a pair on the ground and ran for 75 yards on 12 carries.
Houston started the game a little slow, failing to score on two first quarter possessions, but Ward changed that with a 30-yard touchdown early in the second to put the Cougars on top. The punched the ball in the endzone on their next three drives. Dillon Birden ran the ball in from a yard out, then Ward hit Tyler McCloskey and Steven Dunbar to make it 28-0 Houston.
UConn scored with 30 seconds left in the first half when Bry Shirreffs hit Noel Thomas for a 62-yard touchdown, but Houston scored on its first two possessions of the second half. After Ward ran for a 10-yard touchdown, he found Linnell for a four yard touchdown catch.
Shirreffs carried the ball in the endzone in the fourth quarter. He threw for 239 yards while Noel Thomas caught 6 balls for 135 yards as the Huskies fall to 2-3 on the season, 0-2 in AAC play.
Bonner had a 12 catches, 159 yard night for Houston, while Chance Allen caught 7 passes for 85 yards. Houston gained 540 yards of total offense and committed just two penalties.
The Cougars will look to get to 6-0 next Saturday when they play at Navy.
