Houston (CBS Houston) – David Villa’s brace lifts New York City FC past the Dynamo, 2-0, and into first place in the Eastern Conference.
The Dynamo were trying to win their third straight MLS match for the first time since 2012, and while being up to the challenge, ultimately fell short.
At the start of the match, both teams came out in a frantic pace before finally settling into a calm match.
After the first 45 minutes neither team could score a goal and would head to the locker rooms in a scoreless draw.
That would change in the 52nd minute when Villa scored his 20th goal of the season to give New York City FC a 1-0 lead. Villa, on his second touch, fired a shot from a tough angle past Joe Willis.
Villa’s second goal came one minute into added time in the second half when the Dynamo were aggressive looking for an equalizing goal. Villa took a pass at the top of the box, without pressure from the Dynamo defense, and blasted a shot over Willis and under the crossbar for a two-goal lead.
With the win, New York City FC moves into first place in the Eastern Conference, two points ahead of Toronto FC and three points ahead of the New York Red Bulls.
Villa, with his two goals, moves one goal ahead of Bradley Wright-Phillips for the lead in the MLS Golden Boot race.
With the loss, the Dynamo fall to 7-12-11 on the season and lose for just the third time in 15 matches.
Next week the Dynamo host Colorado to wrap up a stretch of three matches in a row at home.
