HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – Texans linebacker Whitney Mercilus has been a key cog in a Houston defense that is fifth in the NFL in yards allowed per game.
However, the 2-1 Texans have had a few problems making tackles and stopping the run, especially after allowing 185 yards and three touchdowns on the ground in their 27-0 loss to the New England Patriots on Thursday.
Stopping the run will be key again this week for Houston as they face a Titan’s team on Sunday that is third in the NFL in yards per attempt at 5.1 with their two headed attack of DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry.
“We have to stop the run,” Mercilus answered as he was asked about the Titans rushing attack. “That’s the biggest thing. You let guys rush for 30 attempts or more and get 100 yards on you, you’re going to probably lose the game.”
Mercilus doesn’t think the culture of this era’s NFL practice should have any bearing on their struggles bringing ball carriers to the ground.
“We’ve already played three games, so by now we should be good at tackling,” Mercilus said. “That’s something that we definitely need to improve on, judging from last game, so we’ll do that.”
