Houston (CBS HOUSTON) – If you thought just trying to figure out how to block J.J. Watt in years past was tough, it’s about a million more times harder this season.
Throughout the first two games of the 2016 season, the Houston Texans defense has the most sacks in the NFL with nine. It’s not because Watt has seven of them, he actually doesn’t even lead the team, linebacker John Simon leads the team with 2.5 sacks.
“I think we have a ton of guys who make plays and a ton of guys coming from all different ways,” J.J. Watt said, “I think our coaching staff does a great job of getting us ready to play, putting together a good game plan and then we just have to go out there and execute it.”
The first two games might not have been flawless for the defense but they have been pretty close. They are also becoming hard to game plan for, in years past it was pretty easy, stick three guys on Watt and the opposing offense will take their chances with everyone else.
Now if stick two or three guys on Watt you are leaving a handful of pass rushers single blocked or wide open. The health of Jadeveon Clowney and the continued growth of Whitney Mercilus has made the pass rush nearly impossible to get ready for.
“It’s great when all the guys out there are wreaking havoc and making plays, It’s a good thing for the team and for the defense,” Jadeveon Clowney said of the pressure they have been able to put on quarterbacks.
The offense isn’t clicking on all cylinders yet, so being able to lean on the defense has been very big in the team starting off the season 2-0. While the defense is getting contributions on every level, so far none look bigger than the pressure the team has been about to provide.
