HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – The NFL named Houston Texans OLB Whitney Mercilus the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Texans 23-14 win over the Chicago Bears.

Mercilus recorded four tackles, 2.0 sacks, two quarterback hits, one tackle for loss and one forced fumble in the season-opening victory. He helped lead the defense in holding the Bears to a mere 258-yards, second lowest given up by an AFC team.

Mercilus became the third player in team history with 2.0 sacks on Kickoff Weekend, joining J.J. Watt and Mario Williams. He also has the longest streak in the NFL for multi-sack games, at three straight (including the postseason).

Since Week 6 of the 2015 season, Mercilus leads the NFL with 14.0 sacks in 12 regular season contests adding three in the playoffs.

This is the first Player of the Week award for Mercilus in his career and the second consecutive player of the week honor for the Texans. J.J. Watt won the award in week 17 of the 2015 season.
