Hunt, Mumphrey Make Case For Place On Texans Roster

With battles still to be won the final preseason game for the Houston Texans and the Dallas Cowboys had a lot of intrigue for the back end of the Texans roster.  The Texans won the game 28-17 to go to 4-0 on the preseason.

One of the big battles of the evening was for the final running back spot.  Tyler Ervin, the rookie 4th round pick, and free agent signee Lamar Miller are locks to have a spot on the roster. That leaves Alfred Blue, Akeem Hunt, Kenny Hilliard and Jonathan Grimes along with fullback Jay Prosch were fighting for the final few spots in the backfield.

Grimes and Blue did not see the field in Dallas on Thursday night, but that doesn’t guarantee anything for either of them. Instead, Akeem Hunt and Kenny Hilliard saw the bulk of the carries for the Texans.  Hunt ran 12 times for 44 yards and a touchdown adding four catches for 22 yards and a receiving touchdown.  Hilliard got the bulk of the carries, getting 28 carries for 80 yards. Hillard also fumbled the ball inside the Cowboys 20-yard line in the first quarter.

Also on the offense the final wide receiver position on the roster is up for grabs. With DeAndre Hopkins, rookies Will Fuller and Braxton Miller and second-year wideout Jaelen Strong locking down the first four positions Keith Mumphrey, Cecil Shorts III and Wendell Williams all were looking for the fifth wide receiver spot.  The Texans did keep six wide receivers last year out of training camp, but traded Keyshawn Martin to the Patriots early in the season.

Mumphery led all receivers with 83-yards receiving on three catches, including a 65-yard touchdown pass from third-string quarterback Brandon Weeden. Shorts caught four passes for 23 yards on four targets. Williams only caught two passes for 16-yards.

The defense continued to take the ball away from their opponents getting a fumble recovery and an interception that was returned for the final score of the game.

The Texans have until Saturday afternoon to make 22 roster moves and get their active roster to 53-man squad they will take into Week 1 at NRG Stadium against the Chicago Bears.
