Houston (CBS Houston) – When the Dynamo host FC Dallas on Saturday night reclaiming the El Capitan for the first time since 2012 will be their top priority.
The El Capitan is given out each year to the winner of the Texas Derby between the Dynamo and FC Dallas.
With the Dynamo winning earlier this season, 5-0 and then playing to a 1-1 draw in Frisco in MLS play, the Dynamo are in the driver’s seat to win the howitzer cannon. To bring El Capitan back to Houston the Dynamo need to win, draw or lose by less than five goals.
The Dynamo (5-10-10, 25 points) played to a heartbreaking draw against Seattle on Wednesday when the club surrendered a late equalizing goal.
Andrew Wenger scored in the game giving him a team high five goals on the season.
FC Dallas, who have held El Capitan for three straight seasons (a Texas Derby record), will need a miracle to hold on to the prize for the fourth straight season. FC Dallas (13-7-6, 45 points) has bigger things in mind though. They are currently leading the race for the Supporters’ Shield trophy.
The look for FC Dallas is different than the last time the two teams met. Namely, Fabian Castillo, has been loaned out to Trabzonspor in the top Turkish league, is no longer with the club.
Maxi Urruti leads FC Dallas with seven goals on the season, while Mauro Diaz leads the club with 10 assists.
