Houston (CBS HOUSTON) – The Houston Cougars just received their largest ever single donation in the school’s history when restaurant mogul Tilman Fertitta wrote a $20 million check to remodel the Coogs Hofheinz Pavilion.

The $20M is one-third of the $60 million renovation of the 47-year-old arena. The donation will also see the name change of the pavilion to “Fertitta Center.”

“What an honor this is for me today to be able to take this facility and take it to the next level. When I was 8, 10, 11 years old, and (it) had such an impact on me,” Fertitta said.

During the presentation at UH Fertitta said he thinks the new Fertitta Center will help with the push for the University to get into the Big 12 Conference. He also said he expects to hear about that addition in the next 30-60 days.

The Arena would be ready for the 2018-19 basketball season with construction starting after this season.
