HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – Shane Lechler and the Texans punting unit spent a good chunk of practice on Wednesday working on “coffin corner” punts at the Methodist Training Center.

Texans Head Coach Bill O’Brien praised Lechler’s ability to pin the ball inside the 10.

“I think that’s one thing that Shane (Lechler) does really well,” O’Brien said.

In 2015 Lechler had only 24 punts inside the 20, tied for 20th in the NFL last season. Lecher is two seasons removed from being third in the NFL with 34 punts inside the 20.

The difference this season may be the speed they have on special teams to retrieve the punts to keep it from bouncing into the endzone.

“We’ve got some good gunners that can go down there and down the ball” O’Brien said. “If we have to punt the ball from the 50 yard line and we can down the ball inside the 10, then I think it’s just going to be hard to drive the ball 95, 90 yards on our defense.”

While the punt team got some work on Wednesday. O’Brien addressed the return game which has not shown much in the first two preseason games.

“I think our return game definitely needs to improve,” O’Brien said  “I think we have some guys that can return kicks, punts and kicks, and we’ve got to do a better job of fielding the ball, blocking for him, understanding the type of return we have on.”
