HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) — Editor’s Note: Camp Confidential will feature daily news and notes throughout Texans training camp. See All Other Camp Confidentials.
Here are the notes, quotes, and need-to-know information from Texans training camp on Monday, Aug. 22.
>> The Texans avoided a deluge outside by moving inside to practice on their new field at NRG Stadium. The team ran through a slew of light walkthrough-style drills during an unpadded day of work.
>> PLAY OF THE DAY: The secondary has been a strong unit throughout camp and it continued in seven-on-seven drills Monday. A.J. Bouye made a leaping interception down the sidelines in traffic, picking off Brandon Weeden in the process.
>> INJURY REPORT: Several Texans did not practice, including DL Brandon Dunn, K Ka’imi Fairbairn, K Nick Novak, DLs Alex Carrington and Jeoffrey Pagan, OL Derek Newton and WR Josh Lenz.

>> J.J. worked out on the NRG sidelines and was running well, seemingly not limited by pain as he recovers from a herniated disk. On Sunday, head coach Bill O’Brien said Watt was on a “good timeline” toward a return by the start of the regular season.
>> Alfred Blue was back at practice after missing a week and two preseason games with a shoulder issue. The third-year running back out of LSU said he knows his roster spot isn’t guaranteed.
“I feel like every year I have to make the team,” Blue said. “It doesn’t matter how many years you’ve been here because there’s always somebody gunning for you. That’s my mentality.”
>> Christian Covington continues to get run as the every-down defensive end. He was impressive against the Saints on Saturday, and the former Rice standout handled the role well again during Monday’s session against a makeshift Texans offensive line.

>> Speaking of that line, the Texans are still missing Nick Martin (ankle), Duane Brown and Newton (hamstring), meaning three-fifths of their likely starting line remain sidelined. Jeff Allen was back on Monday after missing the Saints game with a death in the family and Kendall Lamm took plenty of snaps at guard.
>> Overall, it was a pretty unspectacular day of practice. The team even traded places for a bit. The offensive unit was training against its own backups masquerading as a defense and the defense ran through coverages in a similar fashion.
>> The heavy special teams work did offer a glimpse at some backups in their starring roles. Guys like Eric Lee and Brian Peters stood out on the coverage unit, and that area may be how the two linebackers lock down a roster spot.
>> With rain in the forecast all week, it’s very possible the Texans will stay indoors for the next several days. The new artificial turf may get plenty of work in this 10-day span from last Friday’s walkthroughs and the preseason game against Arizona on Sunday.
