[EDITOR’S NOTE: WE ARE ASKING EACH OF OUR JOCKS TO DECIDE IF A BUBBLE PLAYER FOR THE HOUSTON TEXANS IS GOING TO MAKE THE CUT AND BE ON TEAM’S 53-MAN ROSTER OR MISS THE CUT AND BE CUT BY THE TEAM. THE FOURTH PIECE OF THE SERIES IS BY MIKE MELTSER – MAD RADIO 2P-6P – ON QUARTERBACK BRANDON WEEDEN]
I don’t know if you’ve noticed this, but the Texans have played quite a few starting quarterbacks in each of the last 3 regular seasons. Bill O’Brien had 4 different players starting games in 2015, and was able to overcome that fact as the Texans went 9-7.
Of course, most of that is bad luck. Houston hasn’t been employing running quarterbacks who would typically be more prone to injury. There’s no systemic reason, from a health standpoint, why this team has had to cycle through so many quarterbacks. Having said that, I think O’Brien’s experience the last 2 seasons will be a factor in deciding how many quarterbacks to keep.
If Weeden makes the roster, the quarterback room is solidified with Brock Osweiler-Tom Savage-Weeden. On the other hand, there’s an obvious appeal to only going with 2 QBs. Osweiler is the franchise QB, and the Texans have a 4th round pick, plus 2 years, invested in Savage. That should hopefully be enough to make it through a season. With an extra roster spot, the coaches can keep an extra player at WR, RB, LB, DB, etc.
Weeden has more natural ability than most 3rd string NFL QBs, especially if you look at his arm strength. He did an excellent job, considering the circumstances, last season. Weeden helped bring the Texans back in a must-win game at Indianapolis and played well in an easy win against Tennessee.
I think this one is going to be a very close call, and may depend on the team’s belief in the players on the very edge of the roster. Ultimately, O’Brien is a QB guy. There have been a lot of comments in training camp in how cohesive the QB room is. When it comes down it, I think O’Brien (and Rick Smith) will keep Weeden on the roster.
