Dynamo, Toronto FC Play To 1-1 Draw

Houston (CBS Houston) – Cristian Maidana’s early goal and stingy team defense, despite playing the second half a man down, leads to a 1-1 draw against Toronto FC.

Earlier in the week, the MLS disciplinary committee suspended David Horst for Sunday’s match after endangering the safety of the opponent. Fortunately Agus was able to return from an injury and take up one of the central back positions. Jalil Anibaba started at right center back, which gives him a start at every defensive position this season.

Interim head coach, Wade Barrett, also made a change up top inserting Mauro Manotas as the lone forward. It marked Manotas’ first career MLS start.

Manotas immediately played dividends as he, and Andrew Wenger, assisted on Maidana’s goal in the eighth minute to give the Dynamo the early 1-0 lead.

Toronto would equalize in the 24th minute off a set piece stemming from a corner kick. Sebastian Giovinco would pass it to Jozy Altidore at the top of the box from the corner. Altidore, who was making his first start since May 14, sent his shot over the top of Joe Willis and just under the cross bar.

Toronto would have two players leave the match in the first half because of injury. First Mark Bloom was replaced by Jay Chapman in the 16th minute, and then Ashtone Morgon replaced Justin Morrow in the 41st.

In first half addition time, Abdoulie Mansally was beat by Giovinco on a quick counter attack off a Dynamo corner kick. Mansally slipped on the wet pitch and in the process tackled Giovinco down with him. Mansally was given a red card and the Dynamo would be down a man the rest of the way. Giovinco’s free kick was shot over the cross bar, which was the last play of the first half.

Barrett, wanting to play with four defenders, would sub in Raul Rodriguez for Andrew Wenger at the start of the second half.

Surprisingly, both teams had opportunities to score in the second half, but neither club could find the go ahead goal.

Manotas was able to spring free in the 60th minute, but Alex Bono saved his shot.

The most dangerous chance came in the 64th minute when an Altidore header deflected off the left post.

Collen Warner almost played the hero’s role in the 87th minute as his shot from the top right of the box grazed off the top of the cross bar.

In the 89th minute, Anibaba would save a Tosaint Ricketts’ header that was making its way towards the back of the net. Anibaba came out of no where and prevented the shot from passing the goal line.

With the draw the Dynamo are now 4-10-9, 21 points and Toronto is 10-7-7, 37 points.

Dynamo will have a short turnaround as they are in San Jose for a match on Friday.
