HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – The Texans wrapped up their sixth day of practice on Saturday and there were plenty of things that stood out to me.

>>>The team was out of pads and in just their shells, or as Quintin Demps calls them “panties.” They worked on a lot of new stuff and situation specific drills. Short goal line stuff early and during the middle the team did some two-minute drills.

>>>Brock Osweiler may use cliches sometimes but he lives them. He gets more impressive every day as he trims the inconsistencies in his game. It will be interesting to see how he does in the joint practices for the 49ers and Saints because even with him being new he can’t play that much during the preseason.

>>>Sticking with Osweiler he has a few moments where you are thinking “no no no” but then he makes a play you are fine with. Too often in recent years the Texans quarterbacks have made you say “no no no” then disgusted you with their decision making. Think about Fitzpatrick against Pittsburgh and Hoyer against the Colts. I don’t think Osweiler will be making similar mistakes.

>>>No Lamar Miller at practice today left plenty of reps for the rest of the running backs. Tyler Ervin had a semi-live rep where he had the wiggle getting past the defensive line and would have broken a big one. He also dropped, back-to-back, two easy passes.

>>>A moment of hilarity today was when Max Bullough, who is having a nice camp, tipped a pass and it flew backward into linebackers coach Mike Vrabel’s hands. Instincts took over and Vrabel took off. He was joined by about 6 other defenders running the ball back. It was a funny moment.

>>>Duane Brown and Derek Newton remained out leaving a few different combinations along the offensive line. Jeff Adams is a name you should remember from last year. He played left guard and tackle early in the season before an injury derailed hi year. He is back and competing for time on the line. If the Texans had to play a game tomorrow I wouldn’t feel great about him being the right tackle but I feel he could play it.

>>>Jadeveon Clowney sat out today so eyes naturally drifted to Whitney Mercilus in pass rush drills. He would have smoked Brock Osweiler in a live rep early in camp but instead, he got there, ducked under the QB, and let him throw the pass. Make no mistake, it would have been a bone-crushing sack.

>>>Johnathan Joseph is good but DeAndre Hopkins got the best of him today in a rep today where Joseph did it all by the book and it still wasn’t enough. Speaking of moves, Will Fuller shook loose, to oohs and aahs, from Kevin Johnson to easily score. It was crisp and precise, again as I mentioned yesterday, route running is not among the training camp concerns for Will Fuller.

>>>Jaelen Strong would make one heck of a basketball player for your team. He is strong, likely the strongest of the receivers, and boxes out defensive backs to get in a position where either he is catching it or it is incomplete.

>>>The kicking competition is still a fight. Yesterday it was Game of Thrones-like. Today? Brawl again. Like this.

There will be plenty more from me on Twitter @Cody_Stoots along with John Lopez and Dante Hall In the Loop 10-2 Monday. We will have a Texans player live with us right off the practice field Monday around 11.
