HOUSTON (CBS Radio) – It’s no secret that shining on special teams is a way for rookies and other players treading the borderline to make a name for themselves and make the 53-man roster.
But now some star Texans players have been getting work in that area as well. Since training camp has started, Jadeveon Clowney has been working on special teams plays and drills, including punt returns and coverage. When asked about his linebacker’s side work, head coach Bill O’Brien didn’t hesitate to say that he’s willing to put his star players out on the field for those plays.
“He can help us on special teams, a lot of these guys can,” O’Brien said after Wednesday’s practice. “Whitney (Mercilus), John Simon, J.J. (Watt) – when he gets back, he can help us in certain ways on special teams. Kareem Jackson has been out there, Johnathan Joseph has been out there at times.
“We’ve got to be better on special teams so if that means some starters have to be on special teams, they’re willing to do it. That’s the good thing about these guys.”
