Here are the notes, quotes, and need-to-know information from Texans training camp on Monday August 1st.
>> DeAndre Hopkins ended his hold-out missing just one day of practice. Rick Smith said on Sunday that the team would be exercising their right to fine him $40,000 for every day missed.
>> Bill O’Brien mentioned that the team looked a lot better today and had shaken off a lot of the first day of camp rust. He said all phases of the team looked much more “crisp” on Monday.
>Hopkins looked to be in great shape and was worked right into the first team offense. Quarterback Brock Osweiler benefitted the most from having his top wide-out. Osweiler looked crisp and connected with Hopkins for a pair of touchdowns during the practice including on the first ball thrown to him beating Jonathan Joseph.
>> Hopkins wasn’t elaborating on his contract stance during his media availability. He mentioned that his holdout was not meant to send a message, but doing what he thought was best for him and his family.
>> Rookie tight end Stephen Anderson continues to get opportunities as an off the line tight-end with the first team offense. He has been rotated with Ryan Griffin and CJ Fiedorowicz
>>Derek Newton was still out of practice after suffering a hamstring injury in practice on Sunday. Coach O’Brien said Newton’s status is “day-to-day”
> DL Christian Covington’s father Grover was at camp today. The elder Covington was a football star in the Canadian Football League. Covington has been seen in a variety of defensive fronts in the early part of camp with the injury to JJ Watt and with auditions on the opposite side of the defensive line.
>> The top-three wideouts in camp appear to be Hopkins, Shorts and Jaelen Strong. Will Fuller and Braxton Miller have also rotated in at times with the first team offense.
