HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – Texans General Manager Rick Smith addressed the media after the first training camp practice session at the Methodist Training Center on Sunday to comment on the recent hold-out by DeAndre Hopkins.
Hopkins decided to end his holdout Sunday afternoon but made it known to the Texans that he is unhappy with his contract situation.
Smith told reporters he was surprised that Hopkins elected to exercise his right to hold out. He also mentioned that Hopkins’ representatives approached the organization about a new deal earlier in the offseason.
“They came to us this summer and talked to us about that and we contemplated and we came to a decision. We communicated that decision to him and told him that it was a firm decision,” Smith said.”We wanted to entertain that because they asked, and we did. We decided that this is not the right time for a number of reasons. That’s our position at this point.”
Smith reaffirmed the club’s position on not negotiating with players at the start of training camp and that the position on Hopkins would not change.
“He’s not here. We’re here. He’s under contract. There isn’t anything to get done other than him coming here,” Smith said.
Smith emphasized that Hopkins should be in camp because he is under contract. He is expected back on Tuesday and Smith said that they plan on acclimating back into the offense upon his arrival.
“When he gets back, we’ll welcome him back,” Smith said. “He’s a heck of a football player and he can help our football team—and we know that.”
