The Houston Astros made a roster move late Thursday night calling up Preston Tucker from AAA Fresno and sending AJ Reed back to the minor leagues. It was not the move many were hoping the Astros would make before they start their series against the Anaheim Angels on Friday. Top Prospect Alex Bregman is staying with the Grizzlies, for now.
The shortstop, who is getting playing time at third base and left field right now so he can fit with the big league club better, has been on fire since being called up to AAA From the Astros AA affiliate Corpus Christi. In 16 games Bregman is hitting .371 with six home runs and 15 RBI for the Grizzlies.
Many speculated that Bregman would join the Astros on this homestand when he told The Triple Threat on SportsRadio 610 on Tuesday that in his mind’s eye his first Major League at-bat would be against a pitcher wearing “red and gray.” Red and gray, the colors of the Angels while on the road, seemed to indicate to everyone that they would see the Astros top prospect this weekend.
Because Bregman is heading to Fresno does not mean that he will not get called up this weekend, it does rule out the likelihood he would be in the lineup on Friday at all.
