The Houston Astros have reportedly agreed to a deal to sign Cuban star infielder Yulieski Gourriel to a five-year $47.5 million deal, according to multiple reports.
Gourriel, who defected in February, became a free agent last month. Multiple teams drew interest in the 32-year-old third baseman including the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees and New York Mets.
But Gourreil, one of Cuba’s most accomplished baseball players, decided to sign with the Astros. There is some speculation that landing the 32-year-old could help a tema land his 22-year-old brother Loudes Gourriel who also defected in February.
The two have been training together in South Florida since arriving in the United States.
