Phil Mickelson started off the Open Championship with one of the best rounds ever in a major tournament. He shot a record-tying 63 at Royal Troon tying 23 other players who have done it in a major. But he was so close to standing alone with the only 62 ever at a major, lined up for a birdie put on 18 and just missing.
That is about as close as you can get without making a put. The ball was center cup until it decided to come back a little bit and lip out. Phil still has a 2-shot lead at the time of this publication at 8-under.
“I feel like crying,” Mickelson said after. “I don’t know what to say. I don’t know how that ball missed.”
Shocked we didn’t see this.
