Report: Rockets-Jazz Nearing Swap of Lawson, Burke

HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – ESPN’s Marc Stein is reporting the Rockets and Jazz are close to consummating a deal that will include a swap of point guards.

Burke is a third-year player drafted in the first round ninth overall in 2013. In his final season college he was the Naismith College Player of the Year as well as a consensus All-American. He also won the Bob Cousy award for the top collegiate point guard. As a rookie with the Jazz Burke averaged almost 13 points and six assists per a game leading to his selection to the All-Rookie First Team. Last year he started fewer games but kept his point average up. This year he has been a backup exclusively for the resurgent Jazz.

Lawson was acquired in a trade with the Nuggets which included the Rockets 2016 first round pick among other players and assets.

He has failed to find a rhythm in Houston seeing almost all of his relevant numbers drop. He is headed for career lows in almost every category starting 12 of the 48 games he has played in this season. In Denver, he started almost every game he played.

The trade can’t go through as just a straight swap. Utah will need to include another player, for example forward Trevor Booker, to make the money match.

Lawson hasn’t spoken favorably about his potential new home.

A Jazz fan compiled a list of the times Lawson has mentioned Utah on the internet.

The deadline is this afternoon.
