HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – The Cleveland Browns signed free agent quarterback Josh McCown in the off-season because they had moved on from previous starter Brian Hoyer and most importantly because of the uncertainty surrounding their first-round quarterback selection in 2014 Johnny Manziel.
The polarizing Johnny Football, criticized by players and fans for his habitual partying, admitted to his family and friends during the offseason that he needed help. Manziel checked into a facility within driving distance of Cleveland in late January.
Aaron Glenn, who serves as the assistant defensive backs coach for the Browns joined In the Loop with Nick and Lopez on Thursday and said that Manziel is as focussed as ever.
“(Manziel) is here just as long as the coaches are,” Glenn said. “He’s a guy that’s more focused, a guy that’s really diving into the playbook, a guy that’s spending a lot of time at the facility.”
McCown was signed as an insurance policy and is penciled in as the starter with the jury still out on Manziel’s ability to be an NFL starter. Glenn pointed out that he thinks McCown’s influence and work ethic is rubbing off on the former Texas A&M star.
“I think Josh McCown has been a huge influence on Johnny,” Glenn added. “You can tell a difference in the way he practices, in the way he starts practice, the way he ends practice. You just see a different attitude with him. “I think he understands what he has to do to be great in this league.”
