The NFL has hired its first full-time female official, according to multiple reports.
Sarah Thomas, who started officiating high school and then Conference USA college games became the first woman to officiate a bowl game in 2009. Last season she officiated some NFL Preseason games as well as New Orleans Saints’ training camps while in the NFL Officiating Development Program.
Thomas told the NFL Network last year she doesn’t feel like a pioneer.
Thomas wouldn’t be the first woman to officiate a regular season game. Shannon Eastin was hired as a non-union official in 2012 and was a part of the crew that officiated the St. Louis Rams and Detroit Lions game that year.
