HOUSTON (CBS RADIO) – The Cleveland Browns arguably have the most watched QB battle happening in the NFL right now.  Will the Browns go with Johnny Manziel, their 1st round (22nd overall) pick, or will they stick with the three year veteran who started three games for them last year Brian Hoyer.

Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon joined Mad Radio with Mike Meltser and Seth Payne Wednesday on SportsRadio 610 and weighed in on who thinks should be starting in Cleveland.

“When (Manziel’s) ready and when Brian Hoyer’s not playing well,” Moon said. “Hoyer should start the season out, I think he deserves to do that.”

Manziel backed up Hoyer in the Browns’ first preseason game against the Lions.  Both players had good games.  Hoyer went 6 for 14 passing for 92 yards while Manziel was 6 for 11 for 72 yards and added 27 rushing yards.  Neither QB threw a touchdown or an interception.  Moon thinks the play on the field is what should dictate if and when Hoyer hands over the keys.

“If (Hoyer’s) not playing well to start the season out then you go ahead and go with Johnny Manziel.  But if your quarterback is playing well, there is no reason to bench him just because you drafted a guy in the first round.”

Moon went on to point out that plenty of quarterbacks drafted in the first round spent some time on the bench before they got their shot.  Aaron Rodgers and Philip Rivers two that are currently playing at a high caliber for their teams.
