The Houston area will have a representative in the Little League World Series for the first time since 2010. The Pearland East All Star team, representing Texas East, defeated Lake Charles, Louisiana 7-3 Wednesday night in Waco at the Southwest Regional.
Pearland went undefeated (15-0) through the Area, District, Sectional, State and Regional rounds. The team won all three of its pool play games in Waco before defeating Biloxi, Mississippi 12-6 Tuesday night in the semi-final round.
An overpowering offense has been the constant for the Pearland squad. They opted to be the visiting team Wednesday and promptly put three runs on the board in the top of the first inning to grab a lead they would not relinquish. Layne Roblyer provided the big hit, with a two-run double.
Pearland added a run in the second inning and two more in the third, building a 6-0 lead. Lake Charles got on the board with three runs in the fourth inning before Pearland added an insurance run in the 5th on a wild pitch. The seventh and final run Wednesday, allowed the team to score a Regional record 59 runs in five games.
Pitcher Matthew Adams earned the win, allowing three runs in five innings of work while striking out four.
The Southwest Regional comprises representatives from New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas in addition to two Texas teams, the East and West state champions. Pearland becomes the fourth Texas East team and the second Pearland squad to win the Regional and advance to Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
