Camp Confidential: Day Four (7-29)
Houston (CBS Houston) – Editor’s Note:Camp Confidential will feature daily news and notes throughout Texans training camp.
Here is what you need to know about today’s practice:
>>>Did Not Practice: Louis Nix, Andre Johnson, Arian Foster, Brandon Brooks, Brent Grimes, Lonnie Ballentine, Akeem Dent, and Travardo Williams.
>>>Rookie tackle Brian Witzmann left practice with an apparent right arm injury.
>>>Tom Savage had his most impressive day yet. He throws the best ball of the three quarterback, although that doesn’t guarantee much. He showcased that arm in 11 on 11 with a nice deep ball to EZ Nwachukwu and a nice ball to tight end Zach Potter on a seam route. Savage is also making quick decision from the pocket, something that rookie quarterbacks can struggle with.
“When you’re a rookie quarterback in training camp, it’s difficult,” Bill O’Brien said. “I think he’s doing a good job of coming in for extra help. He comes in early in the morning and he stays late at night. He’s a very hard worker. Obviously he can throw the football. He’s a talented passer and now we just have to keep working with him to improve on our scheme.”
Savage did a good job reading the defense pre-snap. On one play he noticed they were showing blitz, recognized it and adjusted.
>>>Overall the offense had a rough day. Multiple interceptions, fumbles and dropped snaps. A Case Keenum dropped snapped earned him a lap around the practice field. Running back Andre Brown put one on the ground, earning him some push ups. D.J. Sweainger had a nice interception on Ryan Fitzpatrick as he tried to hit a tight end on a seam route.
“I’d say the defense had the upper hand today.” O’Brien said.
>>>Cornerback Brandon Harris had a good day Tuesday. Harris, a former second round pick who’s fighting for the nickel corner job, played a lot on the outside as Kareem Jackson covered the slot. He had a near interception during 11 on 11 and was around the ball all day.
>>>Newly signed running back Tim Cornett out of UNLV made a good first impression. He wasted no time in introducing himself to Josh Victorian by trucking him early on in practice.
“We felt like he was a guy that was out there we brought him. We worked him out and decided to give him a shot.” O’Brien said.
>>>Kendrick Lewis is primed to be the starter at free safety. He’s taken the majority of the reps with the first team and is developing a nice rapport with D.J. Swearinger.
“(D.J and I) communicating, anticipating things that we see, going over things if we’re on the sideline,” Lewis said. “Us communicating is a big factor.”
>>>Special teams were a big emphasis today. The Texans broke into groups multiple times throughout practice and spent long periods working on it.
“I think it’s going well,” O’Brien said. “The guys are really doing a good job of buying into what we’re trying to teach and I think that what we do in the meeting room is, basically everybody is in their for the meeting, for special teams so the whole team hears it.”
>>>Tackle Tyson Clabo struggled today after tweaking his ankle on Monday. After not being involved in the offseason program, he’s still trying to get his legs under him.
>>>Former Patriots great Willie McGinest dropped by practice as a part of the NFL Network’s training camp coverage. He wasn’t just a part of the media though, he spent time on the field with the coaching staff.
