Camp Confidential: Day Three (7-28)
Houston (CBS Houston) – Editor’s Note:Camp Confidential will feature daily news and notes throughout Texans training camp.
Here is what you need to know about today’s practice:
>>> Did not practice: Brandon Brooks, Louis Nix, Brent Grimes, Brian Cushing, Akeem Dent, Arian Foster, Ricky Sapp, Lonnie Ballentine, Travardo Williams, and Kofi Hughes.
>>>Andre Johnson tweaked his right hamstring after making a diving catch in 11 on 11 drills.
“I just got a little tight,” Johnson said after practice. “It’s just a precaution.”
Bill O’Brien called it ‘minor’. For more on Andre Johnson’s injury Click Here
>>>Jadeveon Clowney participated is some of the contact portion of practice but not all of it. Clowney was the star of the day nearly recreating his famous hit in the Michigan game on running back Dennis Johnson. Luckily for Johnson, Clowney pulled up. Linebackers coach Mike Vrabel was asked about Clowney’s transition from defensive end to linebacker.
“He’s doing a good job of seeing the formations, adjusting to them, making the calls, and being conscientious.” Vrabel said.
>>>Johnathan Joseph was limited in practice today, mainly during the contact portion.
“I did a little more today and I think that’s the plan.” Joseph said. “(My toe) is holding up pretty good. I’m doing everything I need to do in the training room just to stay on top of my body.”
>>>In their first day in full pads the Texans went back to the basics. A significant portion of practice was spent on technique and tackling. It was a far more physical practice than what was seen under Gary Kubiak. Players were encouraged to make contact.
“I thought that today was a good day. I really did,” Bill O’Brien said. “These guys went out there and competed. I’m not saying everything was the prettiest brand of football in the world, but I thought these guys got better today.”
>>>In one of the more interesting developments, rookie Xavier Su’a-Filo is working at right guard. He was expected to compete with Ben Jones at left guard. This could be an indicator of Brandon Brooks status. If Brooks is dealing with something serious, it would help to have Su’a-Filo ready to go on the right side.
>>>Running back Andre Brown continues to get a lot of reps in Arian Foster’s absence, but he needs to work on his hands if he wants to be a threat out of the backfield. Brown dropped a couple of easy passes Monday.
>>>With Brian Cushing on the PUP list and Akeem Dent not practicing, Jeff Tarpinian and Justing Tuggle to the majority of the reps at inside linebacker. Tuggle had a good day in coverage, making a nice play on the ball when shadowing Andre Johnson.
>>>Tyson Clabo momentarily tweaked his ankle but later returned to practice.
>>>Case Keenum struggled to get the ball out on time. Unlike Ryan Fitzpatrick, who makes very quick decisions, Keenum hesitated in the pocket today. At one point during 11 on 11 he was forced to roll out and ran out of bounds because he could not find an open target downfield.
>>>Even though Tom Savage is the third-string quarterback, he’s getting plenty of reps. Often times the first and second teamers will run 7 on 7 or 11 on 11 on one side of the field while the third team runs it on the other. This means Savage is getting plenty of reps in O’Brien’s system.
>>>The Texans practiced with noise, like they do everyday, but this time the quarterbacks were getting the play calls through their helmet receivers. This allows them to practice getting the play call in a game-like environment.
