Houston (CBS Houston)- After an off-season of contemplating his future with the Texans, Andre Johnson reported to Texans training camp Friday with one major theme.
“I just love playing the game of football.” Johnson said, later adding, “I don’t plan on walking away from this.”
Johnson didn’t want to go into detail about his conversations with the Texans front office, but multiple reports indicate the two sides had most recently battled over a $1 million workout bonus. Despite an off-season of frustration, Johnson appeared upbeat, smiling and joking throughout his media session.
“I feel very comfortable with where the organization is going.” Johnson said.
As late as Thursday night Johnson’s status remained unknown. Leading to a dramatic moment when number 80 walked in to NRG Stadium. Left tackle Duane Brown said the entire team broke out in a slow clap.
“Everyone was excited to see me. I was just as excited to see them as they were to see me.” Johnson said. “This is the first time I’ve been away from my team as long as I have, so it was a little different, but it is what it is and I’m here and ready to work.”
Bill O’Brien spent much of the off-season tutoring his team on a new offensive system and Johnson did not have access to a playbook for the entire time he was away, but he doesn’t expect to have too much trouble catching up.
“That’s my job to make up for the time that I missed. I’ll do that,” Johnson said.” I’m going to work my butt off and make sure I’m ready to go when it’s time for the real bullets to start flying.”
