Man Gets 50 Years For Texas Holding Cell Attack

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — A man with 10 prior felony convictions has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for fighting with several Southeast Texas jail officers.

Prosecutors in Galveston on Thursday announced the penalty for 33-year-old Dennis Steele. Steele was convicted of two counts of assault on a public servant over an incident last November at the Texas City jail.

Investigators say Steele, with prior drug-related and evading arrest convictions, was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Authorities say Steele was put in a holding cell, fell asleep, but became combative when officers tried to move him. Investigators say two officers were hurt when Steele bit, scratched and kicked them. A third jailer helped regain control of the suspect.

Steele wasn’t hurt.
