HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – The Houston Texans will have a rookie quarterback heading into Training Camp this season according to Head Coach Bill O’Brien.

During an interview with NFL Network AM on Monday O’Brien talked about the prospects of the No. 1 pick being a quarterback and cemented that the Texans will take on in the draft, just not guaranteed at number one overall.

“I don’t think there is any question that we’ll draft a quarterback in the draft,” O’Brien said. “Where we draft that quarterback I don’t think we know that yet.”

“We’re still in the process of studying all these prospects and in the process of putting a grade on them and trying to place them where they would be in the draft.”

O’Brien isn’t just looking at the three big name quarterbacks that everyone is talking about either.  There are plenty of other names on that list.

“There are more quarterbacks than just three,” O’Brien said. “Obviously the three guys everyone talks about. Blake [Bortles], Teddy [Bridgewater] and Johnny [Manziel], those guys are good players they’ve had great college careers.  But there are other guys out there.”

“You’ve got [A.J.] McCarron. You’ve got [Zach] Mettenberger. You’ve got [Tom] Savage. You’ve got [Jimmy] Garroppolo. I mean i could go right down the list.  To me you’ve got 10 to 12 guys  that you’ve really got to do a great job of evaluating and make the best pick possible wherever you pick these guys.”

Some of the big name prospects O’Brien didn’t mention were Aaron Murray, Derek Carr and Tajh Boyd.  Of course it is impossible to know if that means these players are not on the Texans radar or not.  O’Brien mentioned there could be a dozen quarterbacks that show enough to make an impact on a team like the Texans.

Currently the Texans have three quarterbacks on their roster. Newly signed Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum and T.J. Yates all have experience, but it is unlikely they all stay on the roster after a future quarterback is drafted.
