TULSA, Okla. (CBS Houston) – A man accused of killing his aunt and trying to set her home on fire told police he was tired of exchanging sex with her for housing, reports the Tulsa World.
Prosecutors say 37-year-old Jeremy Lee Sappington shot 50-year-old Verna Sarten in the head with a .22 caliber revolver then left the scene in her boyfriend’s truck.
The boyfriend, Gerald Howard, told investigators he was worried after not hearing from Sarten or Sappington and asked a family member to check on them.
The family member found Sarten’s partially clothed body in the house.
Police say there was evidence someone tried to start a fire, including melted carpet near a space heater and an oven left on with the door open.
Sappington had been taken into custody for public intoxication when authorities questioned him about the killing.
Court records show he told police he wanted to end his sexual relationship with Sarten so he took a gun from under her mattress and fired one shot before leaving.
