PORT ARTHUR, Texas (AP) — Cut-up pieces of a $120,000 bronze statue stolen from outside a Southeast Texas public library have been recovered at a metal recycling center.

Port Arthur police on Friday said nobody has been arrested in the theft of the 300-pound artwork called “The Family.” Sgt. Scott Gaspard says scrap metal thieves could be to blame.

The statue by artist David Cargill had been outside the Port Arthur Public Library since 1981 but was discovered missing Feb. 27.

Police on Tuesday located much of the statue, portraying intertwined figures of adults and children, at a recycling facility in neighboring Liberty County. Gaspard says police questioned several suspects then found smaller pieces at some Port Arthur homes.

The recovered pieces have been documented by police and returned to the library for possible reconstruction.
