GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — Two Coast Guard bomb-sniffing dogs have had some high-flying security training by being lowered from a helicopter to a boat.

Authorities say the dogs named Diggo and Bert had safety goggles, ear protection and a chest harnesses during the training last weekend in Galveston.

Petty Officer Chandler Nuttal said Tuesday that the hoist training went very well. He says some dogs get a little frightened, but others jump right into the exercise.

Coast Guard officials say the animals were lowered from a height of up to 50 feet to a waiting boat to simulate real-life situations. The animals are used to check ships heading for port or in other emergency situations.

The training also exposes the dogs to loud noises plus the motion of the helicopter.
