HOUSTON (CBS Houston/TiqIQ) – When David Stern inherited the NBA, championship games were being broadcast on tape delay. Now as he departs, a mid-season NBA exhibition game carries a price tag for admission of $1,159 dollars, and is considered to be one of the most fun events in sports. Talk about a legacy.

Stern has recently stepped down as the Commissioner of the NBA after 30 years in the role, transitioning the league into one of the best sports businesses in the world. Adam Silver takes over the coveted position and is now at the forefront of one of the most exciting sports weekends of the year, NBA All-Star Weekend.

On February 16, the NBA will showcase all of its stars in a 48-minute contest at the newly-named Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. Pierre the Pelican will likely be in attendance, along with numerous celebrities including some of the biggest names in sports, music, and movies. Currently, the get in price for the normal NBA fan to witness the NBA All-Star game is $413, which is a higher price than that of the most recent MLB, MLS and NHL All-Star games combined. Those three exhibitions have a total get-in price of $408. Many of the All-Star games in other sports are plagued by issues surrounding the effort in exhibition. While the NBA All-Star Game is not without its issues, fun, light-hearted exhibition play works far better in the sport of basketball. Look no further than the success of the Harlem Globetrotters.

In addition, the average price of $1,159 for the NBA All-Star Game tickets is more than that of each of the other three All-Star contests. The 2013 MLB All-Star game at Citi Field in Queens, New York had an average ticket price of $883. The average price of a ticket to the 2013 MLS All-Star game at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kansas was $139. Although there was not an NHL All-Star game last year due to the lockout, we used the data from the 2012 NHL All-Star game at Scotiabank Place (now known as the Canadian Tire Centre) in Ottawa, Ontario. The average price to that contest was just under $500, which is only about 40 percent of the price for this season’s NBA All-Star game.

When compared to another big event this month, NBA All-Star game tickets are 310% more than the price of Daytona 500 tickets. And while that’s not an all-star game in any way, it is arguably the biggest event on the racing schedule. There is a lot of excitement every year as the biggest basketball stars get to play without any pressure, and it’s enjoyable to see them all on the same team having fun. They can shoot from anywhere on the floor, they can dribble anyway they want, and pass as little as they would like without a coach worrying about job security to reprimand them. As such, the All-Star game is always an electrifying event.
