BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A former South Texas district attorney and one-time congressional candidate could face a lengthy prison term when he’s sentenced Tuesday as part of a bribery scandal that took down a state district judge and others.

Former Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos was scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday afternoon in federal court in Brownsville.

Villalobos was convicted in May on seven counts that include racketeering, bribery and extortion. Villalobos allegedly took more than $100,000 in bribes. He was among a dozen people swept up in a FBI investigation that began with former state District Judge Abel Limas.

Limas was sentenced in August to six years in prison for turning his courtroom into a moneymaking endeavor. He cooperated extensively with the investigation and testified at Villalobos’ trial.
