Houston (CBS Houston) - With months between now and the NFL draft, there’s no shortage of opinions on who the Texans should select with the number one overall pick. On Thursday, former Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips joined Nick Wright and John Lopez on In The Loop to offer his opinion.

Listen to the Interview here

“When I did the interview with the McNairs, I told them they ought to take Johnny Football.” Phillips said.  He jokingly implied that the McNairs may have not liked what they heard. “That’s what I told them and I’m sitting here now

Phillips admitted he hasn’t evaluated Manziel in depth, but it’s his playmaking ability he finds intriguing.

“Those kinds of guys who can make first downs when you’re not supposed to, I think they give you something.” Phillips said. “I just think he makes plays that nobody else can make.”

Phillips also thinks Manziel’s potential career as a Texan could resemble that of another Texas great.

“I thought it would be the Earl Campbell of Houston, the reincarnation.” Phillips said. “Having the Heisman trophy winner come to Houston, from the state of Texas, I just thought it would be a neat deal.”
