Houston (CBS HOUSTON) - Rumors of former Chiefs and Browns head coach Romeo Crennel getting brought in as the Texans defensive coordinator started almost as soon as Bill O’Brien became coach.  It would seem those rumors are going to become  fact soon.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN is reporting that Crennel was offered the position of defensive coordinator by O’Brien earlier this week, but asked if he could fulfill his commitment to coach in the college East West Shrine Game Jan. 18th.  Crennel is the head coach of the West all-stars.

O’ Brien and Crennel both have ties to the New England Patriots, but have never actually worked together.  In-fact their meeting Wednesday was the first time the two had ever met face-to-face.

Crennel would join another former Patriot, Mike Vrabel, on the coaching staff.  Crennel coached Vrabel when he was with the Patriots before Vrabel became an assistant coach with Ohio State University.  Vrabel will be the Texans linebackers coach for the upcoming season.
