Houston Astros make a deal and again add to the bull pen, the team on New Year’s Eve announced the signing of 2013 All-Star reliever Jesse Crain to a one year deal. Last season Crain spent 2011-2013 with the White Sox before being traded to the Rays (did not pitch for the Rays) before that Crain was with the Twins from 2004-2010. In 2013 Crain pitched 36.2 innings, KO’d 46, walked 11 and had a VERY low 0.74 ERA, for his career he has a 3.05 ERA in 532 innings pitched.
True this is a risk for the Astros since he has not pitched since June 29th but surly the Astros feel confident he could return to from. Astros GM Jeff Luhnow per official release said “Jesse Crain is a proven, quality reliever that will help us win games in 2014”. I had a chance to speak we both Jarred Cosart and LJ Hoes and both used words like “teach” and “experience” when talking about Crain.
Crain is now the 3rd added reliever this offseason to shore up the bullpen, Crain now joins Chad Qualls and Matt Albers as relievers the team has singed. Jarred Cosart said “The front office is sticking to their word and improving us as a whole”. LJ Hoes had praise for the bullpen “gives the team a lot of confidence, knowing that with a lead your more than likely going to win”.
