Houston (CBS Houston)– The Houston Rockets received good news Tuesday as head coach Kevin McHale rejoined his team. He had taken a leave of absence since last Wednesday due to his mother’s passing.

“It’s nice to be back,” McHale said. “I’m doing alright.”

Assistant coach Kelvin Sampson took over the head coaching duties while the Rockets lost two out of their last three games.

“You have to just go out there and play,” McHale said. “You’re a professional athlete. There’s an effort level that you have to bring every single night and a concentration level. And we’ll get there. It’s just a matter of every single night you have to do your job.”

McHale was at practice Tuesday but James Harden, Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin did not participate in practice.

McHale is expected to be on the bench Wednesday night as the Rockets host the Chicago Bulls at Toyota Center.
