EDINBURG, Texas (AP) — A 64-year-old South Texas cemetery worker has died after a tombstone weighing about a ton fell on him.

Edinburg police say the victim was crushed Wednesday morning at Hillcrest Cemetery while trying to stabilize the 5-foot-tall grave marker.

Cemetery manager Sandy Prost says the tombstone was listing and Guadalupe “Lupe” Mendoza of San Juan was crushed while trying to straighten it.

Police Lt. Oscar Trevino says an autopsy has been ordered. The death has been reported to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
