HOUSTON (AP) — A suburban Houston police officer is hospitalized in stable condition after she was shot by a passenger in a vehicle.

Authorities say Stafford Officer Ann Carrizales was attempting to question three men in an idling car about 3:30 a.m. Saturday when she was in the face and chest.

She returned fire as the car fled, got back in her patrol car and gave pursuit for about four miles.

Stafford Police Lt. Dustin Claborn says other police agencies joined in the hunt after the car stopped in nearby southwest Houston and the men fled on foot. Claborn says the suspected shooter was apprehended and the driver is being sought. Both are from Honduras and believed in the U.S. without legal permission.

Police credit Carrizales’ body armor for saving her life.
