Texas A&M looks to bounce back after last week’s 49-42 loss to top-ranked Alabama and improve on defense before returning to SEC play next week at Arkansas. The Mustangs hope to clean up their play after slipping by FCS school Montana State 31-30 two weeks ago.


Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel vs. SMU’s defense. Manziel has thrown for more than 400 yards in consecutive games to become the first A&M player to do that. His 379 yards of total offense a game ranks fifth in the country. Now the dual-threat quarterback will face a defense that is allowing more than 419 yards a game.


SMU: QB Garrett Gilbert. The former Texas quarterback, who is in his second season at SMU, is averaging 393.5 yards of total offense a game, which ranks third in the nation. His 38 completions a game lead the nation and his 352.5 yards passing a game rank fourth.

Texas A&M: WR Mike Evans. Evans leads the country with 518 yards receiving. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Evans set an A&M record with 279 yards against Alabama. The previous record of 250 yards receiving was set in 1965. Evans has at least six catches and 80 yards receiving in six straight games.


These former Southwest Conference foes first met in 1916. … SMU’s last win in the series came 1984, but the teams played to a 21-21 tie in 1994. … A&M has scored in double figures in 31 straight games. … Darius Joseph leads SMU with 216 yards receiving. … Seventeen Aggies have receptions this season. … SMU is in its first season in the American Athletic Conference. … A&M has scored at least 40 points in each of its first three games. The Aggies have never had four straight 40-point-plus games to start a season.
