Houston (CBS Houston) – Ben Tate has been backing up Arian Foster his entire career. He was initially drafted in the second round to compete for the starting running back job but a broken leg derailed his rookie season. When he returned, Arian Foster had cemented himself as a pro bowl running back and Tate’s opportunity to start was long gone.
But on Monday night it was Tate, not Foster on the field in crunch time. Both Tate and Foster say they have a good relationship but they’re also in constant competition.
“It’s not like we hide anything from each other. I tell him everyday, I’m coming for your spot everyday. That’s just the way it is.” Tate told reporters Wednesday. “If you’re mature about the situation and you both know that you’re both competitors, and you both are pushing each other to be better, then at the end of the day it works out for the team.”
Television cameras caught Foster in a moment of frustration on Monday night, something he said was just a part of his competitive nature.
“You want to be out there, you feel like you’ve earned that right to be out there and that’s just what the frustration comes from.” said Foster.
Amidst what could be a tense situation, they remain friends.
“(Tate) is one of my best friends on the team. I mean we’re really close. I’m always pulling for him while he’s out there.” said Foster.
